Why is it important to make and use ASTM quality BioDiesel?
If you want to sell BioDiesel you must achieve ASTM quality.
If you want to ensure long life for your modern diesel engine it is highly advised to make ASTM quality BioDiesel.
If you want to maintain your engine warranty without question, you must use ASTM quality BioDiesel.
What is ASTM BioDiesel?
The American Standard for Testing and Materials has created a standard for BioDiesel. The Standard includes 14 different tests that are performed on a sample of BioDiesel. When your BioDiesel sample is tested by a certified laboratory and meets or beats each of the tests standards you can claim ASTM quality BioDiesel.
What does ASTM Testing Cost?
ASTM testing is expensive. It can cost between $1,000 and $1,200 per sample and take a month or two to get the results.
Are there less expensive tests that can indicate ASTM quality BioDiesel?
YES, thankfully a new product from Cytoculture, Inc. in San Francisco called the pHLip Test. It is a very sensitive test that visually indicates four of the more difficult tests to pass ASTM. Each test costs about $5.00 and lets you know that you are close to or better than ASTM for glycerin, pH, water and oxidation.
The pHLip Test is great for those that are planning on using the fuel that they make. If you are planning on selling BioDiesel you can use the pHLip test to see if you are close enough to invest in the ASTM test.
